Atty. Anthony Charlemagne C. Yu
Corporate Affiliations:
Atty. Charlie Yu is presently the President and CEO of Empire East Land Holdings, Inc. and Megaworld Central Properties, Inc., two of the biggest and the most active real estate development companies in the Philippines.
He is also the Chairman and President of Empire East Communities, Inc., and the President and Director of Sherman Oak Holdings, Inc., Sonoma Premier Land, Inc., and Valle Verde Properties, Inc. He also sits as a Director of Megaworld Newport Property Holdings, Inc.
Prior to his present positions, he was a Vice President of Megaworld Land, Inc. He was also the Vice President for Corporate and Legal Affairs of Ten Knots Development Corporation, which developed the environmentally-sustainable resorts in El Nido, Palawan. He also actively practiced law in one of the biggest law firms of the country.
NGO Work:
Aside from his numerous corporate affiliations, Atty. Yu has also been very active in NGO work since his college years up to the present. He is the incumbent President of the El Nido Foundation, an environment NGO organized for the sustainable development of the protected areas of El Nido and its neighboring municipalities in Palawan. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ERDA Group of Foundations, NGOs which were set up by the legendary Fr. Pierre Tritz, SJ for the purpose of assisting the poorest of the poor in our country through education and educational assistance, including the establishment of a high school, ERDA Tech, that provides free technical and vocational high school education to around 500 very poor students every year.
He also sits as a member of the Board of IBON Foundation, a non-profit research and education development institution that provides socio-economic research and analysis on people's issues to various sectors (primarily grassroots organizations). He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Culion Foundation, one of the oldest health-based non-government organizations that attends to the needs of Filipinos afflicted with leprosy and other communicable diseases.
He is a member also of the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL), a lawyers’ group advocating respect for human rights and defending the rights of the marginalized sectors of society, and was a volunteer of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG).
He is currently the Chairman of the Board and President of the Philippine Science-assisted school, Laguna BelAir Science School in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Mr. Yu was likewise a member of the Regional Network of Legal Experts on Marine Pollution of a multilateral agency. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Management Advancement Systems Association, Inc., which provides training to, and assessment of, people’s organizations and NGOs around the country.
Academic / Educational Affiliations:
Atty. Yu obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree, major in Political Science, from the Ateneo de Manila University He then pursued and finished his law studies at the University of the Philippines. He holds a Masters Degree from the University of London. He has also undertaken advanced studies on finance from the University of Michigan.
He is presently a Professor of Law at the College of Law of the University of the Philippines. He also taught for many years at the Ateneo de Manila University and has served as a member of the board of Ateneo’s Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC).
